Phoebe reached for him, brought herself up hard against him, and interrupted him with her mouth. West flinched as if scalded and held very still in the manner of a man trying to withstand torture. Undeterred, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him as passionately as she could, touching her tongue to his stiff lips. The feel and taste of him was exhilarating. Suddenly he responded with a primitive grunt and his mouth clamped on hers, wringing sensation from her with demanding pressure. Forcing her lips apart, he searched her with his tongue the way she remembered, and it felt so good, she thought she might faint. My Review:

It’s been two years since Phoebe (Challon) Larson lost her beloved husband, Henry, Lord Clare, and she’s nervous about attending her brother’s wedding.  It’s not so much the social situation that has her anxious, but the fact that her soon-to-be sister-in-law’s cousin is the man who made her late husband’s life a nightmare while they were young boys at school.  Henry was a slight boy, who was sick basically his whole life, and an easy target for a bully, like Weston Ravenel.  Phoebe has never forgotten how much pain West added to Henry’s already sad life, and dreads coming face to face with him.

West Ravenel seems to have finally found his calling.  All his life, he, along with his older brother, Devon, were shuffled around, and then sent off to school because they were unwanted.  As a child, West’s reaction was to become a blustering bully, determined that no one would get the best of him.  As an adult, he was a blatant drunk, a womanizer, and a man mired in scandal.  Things began to change when Devon inherited an earldom, and the brothers went to inspect the estate.  Slowly, and to his own surprise, West found he had a real talent and an affinity for the land and management.  He’s become sober, successful at his job, and a much happier man.

West is immediately thunderstruck when he sees Phoebe, though she seems a bit nervous, and not so charmed by him.  When he notices her discomfort at being seated next to him at dinner, he gallantly offers to move to another location, but Phoebe decides to make the best of the situation, and asks him to remain.  West is truly an appealing and handsome man, and soon he and Phoebe are enjoying a delightful meal and some witty conversation.  Phoebe leaves the meal, realizing that she’s not going to be able to maintain any dislike for West, and opts to forgive the past.

Phoebe also comes to realize that West has an endless supply of information and ideas about managing and improving an estate.  Since Phoebe has sadly neglected her young son’s inheritance due to grieving over his father, she’s now determined to become more involved in her own estate, which has been under the management of Henry’s cousin, Edward.  The more time that Phoebe spends with West, she comes to realize that she’s feeling a strong attraction and liking for him.  West is tied up in knots, as he’s head over heels for Phoebe, and he adores her two young sons, yet he knows his past and his current position make him totally unsuitable for her.

Though West and Phoebe share some passionate embraces, and she is more than willing to pursue the relationship, he decides that it must end when the extended wedding celebration is over.  West lets Phoebe go, but tells her to call on him if she ever needs his help with her son’s estate.  It turns out that is exactly what happens.  Phoebe finds the estate books in no shape to be deciphered, and the manager, Edward, acting very cagey and evasive, while pursuing marriage with her.  At first opportunity, Phoebe summons West, who immediately comes to her aid.

This time spent together is idyllic, as West and Phoebe fully explore their passion. They not only feel an intense attraction, but they like and admire each other, and have witty conversation and fun times.  West and the boys get along famously, and Phoebe knows she wants this permanently.  West, however, is adamant that he would never let his sordid past sully her and her boys’ reputations, and he will leave after he straightens out the bookkeeping nightmare.  Phoebe has no choice but to let him go.  And West finds himself purposeless, heartbroken, and back in his drunken lifestyle.

Lisa Kleypas fans will appreciate that Phoebe is the daughter of Evie and Sebastian (DEVIL IN WINTER) and that they appear in this book, as loving and passionate as ever, even after over twenty five years of marriage.  They aren’t just here for nostalgia, but play a prominent part of the story, especially the devilish Sebastian, who is just as swoonworthy as ever.  There were also many other old friends stopping by from the WALLFLOWERS and RAVENELS series.

I truly love West and Phoebe, individually and as a couple.  Poor West is so agonized over the things he did and the man he used to be, that he really doesn’t see the wonderful man he is now, and all that he has to offer.  Today he’s hard working, kind, considerate, and a true gentleman, though he doesn’t think so.  Unlike most men of the time, West encourages Phoebe to take an active role in estate management, and is fully confident that she is capable.  Phoebe is intelligent, forgiving, loving, patient, and a wonderful mother.  I particularly like how she took the time to listen to West’s ideas, even when she was still angry with him.  There is no doubt they belong together.

DEVIL’S DAUGHTER is a captivating, heartwarming, steamy, and emotional read.  I was smiling from the moment West and Phoebe met, as this book was just a pure, smooth, delight.  Be prepared to carve out a large chunk of time when starting this book, because you won’t want to put it down.     ~Rose
