About the Author:
Author Bio – When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

My Review:

Jessamine Fane is the daughter of an English earl and a Frenchwoman. When she was twelve, her mother deserted her husband and England, taking Jess with her to France to reunite with her first love, a Bonaparte loyalist. Jess’s father wasted no time in divorcing his wife and disowning his daughter. Now, ten years later, Jess has been forced by her mother’s lover into the position of writing traitorous letters to the English nobles who are part of the smuggling ring. Jess has learned that refusing only causes her to be beaten, whipped, or to have her ill mother’s medicine withheld. English intelligence has determined that Jess is the key to finding the identities of those involved in the smuggling ring and bringing it down. A perfectly executed mission now has Jess in the hands of English agents, who have imprisoned her, and are taking her back to England to face charges of treason.
Peter Flint is a baron, and an agent for the crown, as his father was. He is currently in charge of the mission to bring Jess back to London to be interrogated, then put on trial, and most likely, to be hanged. He is initially appalled at finding the conditions Jess has been imprisoned in, as well as the abusive treatment by his own countrymen. His compassion for the beautiful, but foul mouthed and furious Jess is rewarded by her multiple escape attempts. Peter knows he has to harden his heart, as he learned a valuable lesson years ago while in a situation very similar to this one. He can’t let his emotions overrule his common sense and his duty.
Though showing a brave face, Jess is terrified. Going to London will surely mean a death sentence, and being recaptured by Comte de Saint-Aubin-de-Scellon, only means the same thing. When she sees the Comte in a passing carriage, knowing that he’s willing to take the risk of coming to England for her, himself, she is beyond frantic. Peter finally convinces Jess that he will do everything in his power to have her sentence lightened if she will only cooperate and confide everything she knows about the smuggling ring to him. In order to keep her safe, Peter temporarily takes Jess to his country estate.
Peter’s mother is in residence, and provides a touch of lightness to this dark story by treating Jess as a favorite guest rather than a traitorous prisoner. The baroness also calls her five married daughters, along with their families, to come and visit. Peter’s mother and sisters appear to have one goal in life, and that is to see Peter married. They lose no time in embracing Jess, and regaling embarrassing tales from Peter’s youth.
While Peter fights his growing attraction to Jess, intelligence reports show that the Comte has discovered her whereabouts, and is en route. With no time to send his family to safety, and not enough men to withstand an attack, Peter struggles to come up with a plan to keep everyone safe.
Author Virginia Heath has written what truly seems to be an impossible situation. Even if Jess survives the Comte, how can she avoid being hanged as a traitor? Peter is a principled and dedicated man, who is definitely struggling with his conflicting feelings of duty vs. passion. I admire how he never lied to Jess, even when the truth hurt Somehow, I never warmed to Jess, even after learning the details of her sad past, and how she was truly a victim. Peter and Jess’s lust seemed to turn too quickly into love, and the conclusion felt somewhat rushed to me. THE UNCOMPROMISING LORD FLINT is a story tailor-made for fans of spies, intrigue, and an enemies-to-lovers romance. ~Rose
